Matched betting in Australia: how it actually works
Matched betting means backing an outcome at a bookie and laying that same outcome on a betting exchange, so the result of the game barely matters. It's maths, not tipping. Bonus bets get flipped this way via Betfair; arbitrage is a separate, bookie-v-bookie method (covering every outcome across different bookies, no exchange). See our arbitrage guide for that. It also works differently here than it does in the UK, so here's the honest Aussie version.
The two sides of a matched bet
- Back bet: a normal bet at a bookie that something will happen.
- Lay bet: a bet on an exchange (Betfair is the main one licensed in Australia) that it won't happen. You're playing the bookie: if the outcome loses, you win the other punter's stake; if it wins, you pay out the liability.
When the back and lay odds are close, the two bets roughly cancel out. You'll usually lose a small amount, called a qualifying loss.
The lay stake formula
Lay stake = (back stake × back odds) ÷ (lay odds − commission)
Example: $50 back at $2.10, lay at $2.14, 5% commission. Lay stake = $105 ÷ 2.09 = $50.24, liability = $50.24 × 1.14 = $57.27. Either way the game goes, you're down about $2.27. Check your own exchange commission rate, because it varies.
Where the value comes from
A qualifying bet on its own just loses a little. The value comes from things like price differences between bookies and the exchange, and from promotions offered to existing customers. Be aware of these rules:
- Since 2019, licensed Australian bookies can't offer inducements to open an account or for referring friends (the National Consumer Protection Framework). The big UK-style sign-up offers don't exist here.
- Some states, including NSW and SA, restrict promotions to existing customers too. What's on offer depends on where you live.
- Bookies can and do limit or close accounts that only take promos or obvious value.
That's why we don't advertise or link to any bookie or bonus offer. Our members' channel focuses on the method: staking, timing and spotting value.
The real risks
- Human error: a wrong stake, a wrong market, or a lay that doesn't get matched before the odds move.
- Liability: you need enough in your exchange account to cover it.
- Rules mismatch: the bookie and exchange might settle differently (e.g. a tennis retirement or an extra-time rule).
- Account restrictions, as above.
So it's lower risk than straight punting, but it isn't risk-free and it isn't guaranteed.

Tax
For most recreational punters, gambling winnings in Australia aren't taxed. If you do it at a business-like scale, get advice from an accountant. This isn't tax advice.
